Task 6: Retro Design Styles Commentary

I’m reviewing wooden toy quarterly collectors edition. For the packaging and layout. It is very retro in its style, it reminds me of being a kid in the 50's and wanting to be an astronaut not that I was a kid in the 5o's or anything, its just that if I were this is how I’d imagine books and magazines being. The colours are very well chosen, blue and dirty rusted orange will always be a good combination if your wanting to get across that old vintage feel and effect. I think it was used because mainly out of Timba's personal taste and what he likes, and also to get across that collectors quality and bring some historical merit for the design.

I've got some photo's of the mag so you can see what all the fuss is about, i hope you get inspired and gather some ideas from it all.

Task 5: Graphic Designer Review

Established in 2005 by Paul Mosig and Rachel Peachey, Racket is an independent award winning design studio based in Melbourne Australia. Racket specialists in unique high quality solutions for web, print and identity. Their approach towards design is informed by their background in visual arts, graphic design and human ecology. Paul and Rachel are accomplished multimedia artists, with interests in sustainable practice, community engagement and cultural development.

I like there philosophies towards their design practices and their style is defiantly their own. Very aesthetically pleasing, it makes you feel like you want to reach out and touch it. They recently featured their design in the this is not art festival postcards, and merch. So check out some of these images and get inspired yo!

Task 4: Design Book Review

Book: Helvetica Forever
Author: Lars Müller

This book reveals the creation of the face with an amazing amount of fascinating detail, fortunately not just with words but plenty of period graphics and sample type settings. What was really cool were the hand written journals by Hoffman. There are pages and pages of examples pf the evolution of this typefave and the very first hand drawn version
There is an interestiong chapter called A Comparison by Indra Kupferschimd, which looks at all the pre and post Helvetica faces and there is heaps of the,. The success of the face from 1957 onwards persuaded several type founders to 'Helveticize' their fonts by changing a, c, e, s, t and cap equivalents to look as much as possible like the real thing.
The book is nicely produced in the typical Swiss style though that does mean unfortunately that tiny type has to be used somewhere and in this case it's the extensive captions and notes: 6.5 point seems too small for me to read and im only a young thing.
Designers and type fans will enjoy the story of a typeface that is reliable, practical, neutral and with some letters allude to sexy times. Ah ha ha so check it out.

Task 3: Graphic Design Magazine Article Review

This year in the October issue of Desktop: Mag, there was an article on 'The World of Peter Hoffman' he is a German born illustrator and graphic designer. His work is very a good fusion between illustration and digital design. He gives good and practicle advice of what it is to be a designer and how to go about designing for clients. So check out his work at his personal website www.glashaus-design.com or read all about it in the otcober issue of desktop: Mag..

Task 2: Blog or Website Review

I'm reviewing Timba Smits Wooden Toy Magazine Quarterly.
the Wooden Toy Publishing Co was founded in late 2005 by Melbourne born art director, artist, magazine junkie and ping pong afficienado Timba Smits. Born through a combination of loves, instinct and determination, The Wooden Toy Publishing Co has become Timba, Josie and Jay's sharpened desire to design, publish and distribute the most unique, limited and collectible art & design related magazines, books and products the world has ever seen.
Timba is also a guest curator of Gorker Gallery, a cutting edge contemporary art space in Melbourne's premier art precinct, Fitzroy.
I find this website heaps informative on up and coming contemporary artist and its like your being let in on all the little secrets in the art world.
So yeah check out its quircky little set up with its vintage and tattered appeal.
